The Old City of Salamanca in Castile and León was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988. Known as La Ciudad Dorada (The Golden City) for the warm glow of its local Villamayor sandstone architecture, Salamanca is one of Europe’s most celebrated university cities, anchored by ancient collegiate colleges, grand Plateresque palaces, and double cathedrals.
The University of Salamanca & Plateresque Facade
Founded in 1218 by King Alfonso IX of León, the University of Salamanca is the oldest active university in the Hispanic world and one of the four historic intellectual pillars of medieval Europe alongside Bologna, Paris, and Oxford. Its magnificent 1529 Plateresque entrance facade features intricate relief carvings of the Catholic Monarchs, medallion portraits, and the famous lucky carved frog perched on a human skull.
Plaza Mayor & The Two Cathedrals
- Plaza Mayor: Designed by Alberto de Churriguera between 1729 and 1755, widely acclaimed as Spain’s most harmonious Baroque public square, lined with sandstone arcades, medallion busts of Spanish kings and explorers, and lively terrace cafés.
- Catedral Vieja (Old Cathedral): 12th-century Romanesque cathedral crowned by the ribbed Byzantine-influenced Torre del Gallo lantern tower and housing 53 painted altarpiece panels by Nicolás Florentino.
- Catedral Nueva (New Cathedral): Built between 1513 and 1733 alongside the Old Cathedral, showcasing soaring late-Gothic vaulting, a Baroque dome, and the whimsical carved astronaut added during the 1992 restoration.
- Casa de las Conchas: 15th-century Gothic-Mudéjar urban palace decorated with over 300 carved sandstone scallop shells, the symbol of the Order of Santiago and pilgrimage to Compostela.
