Founded in 1187 by Alfonso VIII, this royal monastery housed noble women and had extraordinary ecclesiastical and civil powers. The complex showcases Gothic, Romanesque and Mudejar architectural elements. Its museum displays medieval textiles and the royal pantheon contains tombs of several Castilian monarchs.
