About Alcalá de Henares

Alcalá de Henares is a historic university city in the eastern Community of Madrid, located along the Henares River 30 kilometers east of Madrid capital. Famous as the 1547 birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes (author of Don Quixote) and home to the prestigious University of Alcalá (founded by Cardinal Cisneros in 1499 as the world’s first planned university city), Alcalá was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998.
