Cardona

A historic Catalan town 90km northwest of Barcelona, dominated by the most important medieval fortress in Catalonia - the Castle of Cardona, built by Wilfred the Hairy in 886. Famous for the unique Muntanya de Sal (Salt Mountain), one of Europe’s largest salt deposits formed by ancient seawater evaporation. The salt mountain and medieval castle create a dramatic landscape overlooking the Cardener River valley. This former salt-mining town doubled in population during the mining boom and now serves as a popular day trip from Barcelona, offering insights into medieval Catalan history and geology.
