Olite is a small historic town in central Navarre dominated by the Royal Palace of Olite, former court of the Kings of Navarre. The palace is the obvious reason to come, but the old streets, Gothic churches and surrounding wine country give the town enough depth for more than a castle-only stop.

Why Visit Olite?

Olite is a strong choice for travelers who enjoy castles, medieval history, photography and wine. The historic center is compact, so you can see the palace and town in one day without a car once you arrive.

A half-day visit works if the palace is your sole priority. A full day is better for the palace, old town, churches and a relaxed meal; one night makes sense if you also want winery time or the streets after day visitors leave.

Royal Palace: Old Palace vs. New Palace

The castle complex has two distinct parts. The Old Palace now houses a Parador, while the New Palace is the visitor attraction with galleries, courtyards, chambers, towers and gardens. That distinction is useful when planning because a hotel stay and the public palace visit are separate experiences.

What to See Beyond the Palace

• Plaza Carlos III: The main civic space and a natural transition between the palace and the rest of town.
• Church of Santa María la Real: A Gothic church adjoining the palace complex and closely tied to the medieval court.
• Church of San Pedro: The older church in town, combining Romanesque origins with later alterations.
• Historic streets and walls: Olite’s noble houses, arcades and surviving Roman/medieval fabric make the walk between monuments part of the visit.

Wine Is the Best Second Theme

Olite sits in an important Navarre wine area, and the official tourism board promotes winery visits and wine-culture experiences as a natural extension of the palace trip. If you have a full day or overnight stay, wine adds more regional context than simply trying to fit in another castle nearby.
