About Zafra
Zafra is a compact historic city in Badajoz province, Extremadura, often called “Little Seville” (Sevilla la Chica). Its strongest reason to visit is the walkable old center: the porticoed Plaza Grande and Plaza Chica, the Alcázar de los Duques de Feria—now a Parador—and a long tradition as a regional commercial and livestock center. It works particularly well as a cultural stop on a wider Extremadura road trip rather than as a destination that needs several full sightseeing days.
Arcaded Plazas & Ducal Heritage
- Plaza Grande & Plaza Chica: Two interconnected 15th-century arcaded pedestrian squares; Plaza Chica features the historic Vara de Medir (measuring rod) carved into a column for medieval cloth merchants.
- Palacio de los Duques de Feria (Parador de Zafra): A colossal fortress featuring nine rounded defense towers and a white marble central Renaissance courtyard.
- Calle Sevilla: The pedestrian shopping spine lined with traditional Extremaduran shops selling acorn-fed Jamón Ibérico de Bellota and local DO Ribera del Guadiana wines.
Ruta de la Plata Transit
Zafra is situated on the historic Ruta de la Plata (Silver Route) along the A-66 motorway, located 1 hour 15 minutes north of Seville and 45 minutes south of Mérida.
Who Zafra Is Best For
Zafra is a strong choice for travelers who enjoy small historic centers, regional food, and slower road-trip stops between larger destinations. The main sights sit close together, so you can understand the city on foot without building an elaborate itinerary.
It is less suitable if you are looking for major museums, nightlife, or a dense schedule of headline attractions. In that case, treat Zafra as a half-day or overnight stop and pair it with Mérida, Cáceres, or another Extremadura base.
