Even outside peak summer, Barcelona prices above the national average. The city hits €177.99 ADR in May—strong shoulder season. Shifting your trip by 2–3 weeks can change your hotel bill dramatically.

2026 Spain Travel Guide
What you will actually pay, where prices spike, and how to book smarter across Barcelona, Madrid, the islands, and beyond.
A standard double room in Spain typically costs €60–€110 per night for budget hotels, €90–€170 for mid-range 3-star properties, €130–€240 for upscale 4-star hotels, and €220–€500+ for 5-star luxury. Spain's national hotel ADR (Average Daily Rate) averaged €127.7 in 2025 according to INE benchmarking data.
Short stays, road trips, smaller cities, or when you are out all day
Couples, city breaks, weeklong trips where daily comfort matters
Families, longer stays, comfort plus amenities
Special occasions, honeymoons, premium comfort seekers
What is ADR? Average Daily Rate is an industry benchmark from hotel revenue per occupied room—not a guaranteed public rate. Think of it as a reliable baseline for setting expectations. Data sourced from Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE).
Spain's national hotel ADR averaged €127.7 in 2025, with December 2025 ADR at €120.3. INE also reports ADR by hotel star category, which helps anchor expectations for what each tier actually costs.
How to use this: If you are shopping 4-star hotels across Spain, seeing options around €120–€200 in normal weeks makes sense. If you are seeing €280+, you are likely in a demand spike from an event week, peak season, prime location, or limited inventory.
Spain is not one hotel market—it is several, and they behave differently. Big business and culture cities like Madrid and Barcelona have strong weekday demand plus conference events. Beach and island destinations like the Balearics and Costa del Sol see intense summer seasonality. The Canary Islands have steadier year-round demand, often peaking in winter sun season.

Even outside peak summer, Barcelona prices above the national average. The city hits €177.99 ADR in May—strong shoulder season. Shifting your trip by 2–3 weeks can change your hotel bill dramatically.

Madrid reaches €197.79 ADR in October—classic autumn business and event strength. Conference weeks can push rates significantly higher than the baseline.

The Balearics show the classic summer surge pattern. August ADR nearly doubles November rates. Shoulder months of May–June and September offer the best compromise of weather and price.

The Canaries are the exception to mainland seasonality. Winter sun demand keeps ADR strong even in February. If you want Spain plus beach without July/August sticker shock, the Canaries often give better value.

Las Palmas province ADR stays at €150.92 even in November. The Canaries give year-round warmth without the extreme summer spikes of mainland beach destinations.

Seville's hotel market is heavily event-driven. Holy Week and the April Fair push prices sharply. Summer heat actually depresses rates, making July–August a counterintuitive value play.

Valencia offers significantly lower hotel prices than Barcelona and Madrid most of the year. The major exception is Las Fallas in March, when availability tightens and rates jump.

The Costa del Sol follows beach destination seasonality. Summer rates climb, but the mild winter climate means the region does not drop as dramatically as interior mainland cities.
These are realistic booking ranges for most travelers, assuming a standard double room. Prices vary by destination, season, and day of week.

Basic, clean accommodation suitable for short stays, road trips, or travelers who spend most of their time out exploring. In Spain a "hostal" is a small, legitimate budget hotel or guesthouse, not a dorm-style hostel.
Best For
Short stays, road trips, smaller cities, or when you are out all day
Watch Out
Soundproofing can be minimal, rooms tend to be smaller, limited reception hours, and no elevator is common in older buildings.
INE benchmark: 1★ ADR €85.3 · 2★ ADR €76.6 (Dec 2025, INE)

The sweet spot for most travelers. Reliable comfort, often with on-site restaurant or bar, and generally good locations. Boutique properties in this bracket can surprise with character and quality.
Best For
Couples, city breaks, weeklong trips where daily comfort matters
Watch Out
Best value is found in neighborhoods just outside the historic core and with midweek stays.
INE benchmark: 3★ ADR €92.4 (Dec 2025, INE)

Well-located properties with full amenities. Prices climb in Barcelona, Madrid, and island peak season. Breakfast packages can be a good deal in Spain, especially in resort areas.
Best For
Families, longer stays, comfort plus amenities
Watch Out
Prices are higher in Barcelona, Madrid, and on the Balearic Islands during summer. Book cancellable early, then re-check closer to your dates.
INE benchmark: 4★ ADR €116.8 (Dec 2025, INE)

Spain's luxury segment includes iconic city properties like the Ritz Madrid and high-end island resorts. The INE benchmark shows a 5-star ADR of €277.5, but prime dates and resort locations regularly exceed that.
Best For
Special occasions, honeymoons, premium comfort seekers
Watch Out
Peak dates, event weekends, and island high season can push rates well beyond €500 per night.
INE benchmark: 5★ ADR €277.5 (Dec 2025, INE)
When you travel matters more than almost any other factor for hotel prices in Spain. Shifting your dates by even 2–3 weeks can change your nightly rate by 30–50% in popular destinations.
Late June through August (beaches/islands), Semana Santa, major events
Expect the highest prices during July–August in beach and island destinations, Holy Week in historic cities, long weekends and local holidays, and major conference or congress weeks in Madrid and Barcelona.
April–May and September–October
Warm weather, fewer crowds, strong hotel availability. Barcelona's ADR rises notably in May. These months offer the most balanced combination of pleasant conditions and reasonable pricing.
November–February (mainland), with Canary Islands exception
Best bargains on mainland Spain. The important exception: the Canary Islands are popular for winter sun, and ADR stays strong. Mainland cities like Madrid and Barcelona can still spike during event weeks even in winter.
Spain applies a reduced 10% VAT rate (IVA) to hotel accommodation services. Most consumer-facing hotel prices on booking sites already include VAT. Tourist taxes are the more common surprise add-on—they often appear as “pay at property” charges separate from the headline room rate.

Best value: properties slightly outside the most tourist-saturated zones, and use free cancellation to re-shop prices.
You do not need to sacrifice trip quality to save money. These are practical strategies that work specifically for the Spanish hotel market.
In Madrid and Barcelona, moving from Friday–Sunday to Sunday–Tuesday can mean the difference between a normal rate and a €320 surprise.
That combination is the Spanish hotel price triple-whammy. If all three coincide, expect the highest possible rates.
Instead of insisting on the exact historic center, choose one metro stop out in Madrid or a well-connected district in Barcelona. You usually gain room size and lose cost.
Spain's popular destinations frequently release additional inventory or run quiet promotions. Lock a solid cancellable rate, then revisit closer to your dates.
Especially in beach areas and islands. Kitchenette plus laundry access can cut daily spending even if the nightly rate is slightly higher.
Hotel prices in Spain vary most by destination and season. Spain's national hotel ADR (Average Daily Rate) benchmark averaged €127.7 in 2025, according to INE data. Budget hotels start around €60–€110 per night, mid-range 3-star hotels cost €90–€170, upscale 4-star hotels run €130–€240, and 5-star luxury properties start at €220 and go above €500. Cities like Barcelona and Madrid consistently price above the national average, while smaller mainland cities offer lower rates.
Generally January and February offer the lowest hotel prices on mainland Spain, excluding major events like conferences or local festivals. The Balearic Islands are cheapest November through April (low season). The important exception is the Canary Islands, where winter is actually peak season due to sun-seeking tourists from northern Europe, and hotel ADR stays strong even in February.
Tourist taxes are not uniform across Spain. The two main ones travelers encounter are Catalonia's tourist stay tax (IEET), which applies in Barcelona and across the region, and the Balearic Islands' Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS), which applies in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. These taxes are charged per person per night and vary by accommodation type and season. Most of Spain does not currently have a tourist tax.
Barcelona's tourist tax depends on accommodation type and includes a municipal surcharge on top of the Catalonia base rate. Official tariff schedules show totals of €6.25 per person per night for 5-star hotels, €4.45 for 4-star hotels, and €5.00 for tourist dwellings (HUT). Minors under 17 are exempt. A proposed agreement (not yet enacted as of early 2026) could raise rates progressively, with 5-star hotels potentially reaching €15 per person per night by 2029 if approved.
The Balearic ITS is seasonal. High season (May–October): €4 per person per night for 5-star, luxury, and 4-star superior hotels; €3 for 4-star and 3-star superior; €2 for 1–3 star hotels. Low season (November–April): €1, €0.75, and €0.50 respectively. Children under 16 are exempt. From the 9th night in the same property, rates are reduced by 50%. An additional 10% VAT applies on top of these base figures.
Spain applies a reduced 10% VAT rate (IVA) to hotel accommodation services. In most cases, consumer-facing hotel prices on booking sites already include VAT. Tourist taxes are the more common surprise add-on, as they often appear as "pay at property" charges that are separate from the headline room rate.
Both cities price above Spain's national average. INE data shows Barcelona province ADR at €141.93 and Madrid province ADR at €152.48 (November 2025). Barcelona peaks strongly in May (€177.99 ADR), while Madrid peaks in October (€197.79 ADR) driven by business conferences and autumn tourism. Madrid can actually be cheaper in summer when business travel drops, while Barcelona stays expensive due to tourist demand.
For the lowest prices on mainland Spain, book for late January through March (excluding events). The best balance of good weather and fair prices is April–May and late September–October (shoulder season). For beach and island destinations, May–June and September offer the best compromise of warm weather without July–August peak pricing. Book with free cancellation early, then re-check as your dates approach—Spain's popular destinations frequently adjust pricing.
