The Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida in Extremadura represents the most complete and monumental surviving Roman provincial capital in Spain. Founded in 25 BC as Augusta Emerita by Emperor Augustus to settle veteran legionaries, Mérida was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993.
The Roman Theatre & Amphitheatre
The crown jewel is the Teatro Romano de Mérida, built between 16 and 15 BC by Agrippa. Featuring a magnificent two-tiered Corinthian columned marble scaenae frons (stage wall) housing statues of gods and emperors, the theater still hosts the prestigious International Classical Theatre Festival of Mérida every summer.
