Castle of Loarre
About Castle of Loarre
Castillo de Loarre, perched on a rocky outcrop in Aragon, is one of Spain's oldest castles and offers commanding views over the plains. The Castle of Loarre is often cited as 'one of the oldest in Spain', a prime example of 11th-century Romanesque military architecture. Tucked in the foothills of the Pyrenees, this fortress monastery sits over 1,000 meters above sea level, gazing out across the plains of Huesca. Its ancient stone walls enclose a small Romanesque church and the remains of a royal palace, complete with a keep and several rounded towers.
