About Santa Bárbara Castle
Towering 166 meters above the city of Alicante, the Castle of Santa Bárbara is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain. This sprawling stronghold occupies the summit of Mount Benacantil – a rocky promontory whose silhouette, when seen from below, famously resembles a face (the 'Moor's face' profile). Originally built in the 9th century by the Muslim rulers of Alicante, the castle was later captured on December 4, 1248 – the feast of Saint Barbara, hence its name.
