Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria Cultural Landscape was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019. Encompassing the massive volcanic caldera of Tejeda in the central highlands of Gran Canaria, this mountainous cultural sanctuary preserves troglodyte settlements, cliff granaries, and sacred astronomical temples created by the island’s pre-Hispanic indigenous Guanche/Canario civilization.

Cave 6 & The Solstice Solar Calendar

The centerpiece of the site is Almogarén Cave 6 at Risco Caído, a human-hewn volcanic dome featuring a paraboloid vault with an optical light shaft drilled through the stone ceiling. From the spring equinox to the autumn equinox, the morning sun projects a beam of light onto carved wall reliefs of pubic triangles and fertility symbols, functioning as a complex astronomical calendar to regulate agricultural sowing and spiritual rituals.

Sacred Monoliths & Troglodyte Villages

  • Roque Bentayga: An imposing natural volcanic monolith rising 1,414 meters, holding a stone almogarén sacrificial altar and rock art engravings.
  • Cuevas del Rey & Acusa Plateau: Extensive fortified cliffside cave granaries (cenobios) carved into vertical basalt precipices.
  • Risco Caído Interpretation Centre (Artenara): Detailed museum exhibiting life-sized reproductions of the astronomical cave and Guanche artifacts.
